Evaluation/Data Generation of Neem as Bio-pesticide/Bio-fertilizer in Tripura

Introduction:

The use of chemical pesticides/Chemical fertilizers has increased in a lager quantity for protection and production of crops. These toxic chemical pesticides/fertilizers are resulting harmful effects on public health and our environment is continuously polluting and fertile lands are acquiring infertility.  Therefore, there is a need of alternative method to generate data where Neem can be used as a Bio-pesticide/ Bio-fertilizer for production of safer food and it will help to preserve the environment for next generations.

    There is a huge potentiality of the project not only for the State of Tripura but also for the Nation since most of the farmers of the country are aware of harmful effect of Chemical pesticides/Chemical fertilizers and looking for alternative method where they can use Bio-pesticide/Bio-fertilizer for adopting Organic Farming.

For developing Farmers friendly technology a “Bio-efficacy study of Neem Kernel Powder and Synergist” had under taken with following objectives:

Objectives:

i)   To conduct bio-efficacy study of NKP and Synergist against yellow chilli mite (Polyphagotarsonemus latus) under Laboratory, Shade Net House and Field condition.

ii)  To determine the doses of NKP and Synergist for controlling yellow chilli mite populations.

iii) To find out ovicidal effect of NKP and Synergist against Yellow Chilli Mite.

iv) To study efficacy enhancement of Chemical Insecticides (Profenofos) in combination with Synergist against Brinjal Fruit Borer and Yellow Chilli Mite.

v)  To study Plant based Bio-fertilizer activity of waste of NKP and Synergist after aqueous extraction.

vi) To study Phytotoxicity of Neem.

Duration of the Project: 2 Years.

Experiment Details:   The experiment was conducted under three broad headings:

I. Bio-efficacy of Neem Kernel Powder (NKP) and Synergist against yellow chilli mite (Polyphagotarsonemus latus) under Laboratory, Shade Net House and Field condition.

II. Efficacy enhancement of Chemical Insecticides (Profenofos) in combination with Synergist against Brinjal fruit borer in laboratory and yellow chilli mite in field condition.

III.  Bio-fertilizer activity of waste of NKP and Synergist after aqueous extraction.

I. Bio-efficacy of Neem Kernel Powder (NKP) and Synergist against yellow chilli mite (Polyphagotarsonemus latus):

The experiment was carried out at Debendra Nagar, Lembucherra, West Tripura under Shade Net house condition  consecutively for 2 years in 4 seasons to asses  bio-efficacy of NKP and Synergist against yellow chilli mite (Polyphagotarsonemus latus): under Laboratory, Shade Net House and Field condition of the following objectives

 

 

i.   Percentage (%) mortality of Yellow Chilli mite population under Laboratory Condition.

ii.  Ovicidal effect of NKP and SNG against Yellow Chilli mite population under Laboratory Condition.

iii. Percentage (%) mortality of Yellow Chilli mite population under Shade Net House Condition.

iv. Percentage (%) mortality of Yellow Chilli mite population under Field Condition.

 

II. Efficacy enhancement of Chemical Insecticides (Profenofos) in combination with Synergist against Brinjal fruit borer and yellow chilli:

The experiment was conducted to find out the enhancement of percentage (%) mortality of Brinjal fruit borers and yellow Chilli mite by adding Synergist extract with profenofos under laboratory  and field condition.

 

 

III. Bio-fertilizer activity of waste of NKP and Synergist.

Two experiments were conducted for finding plant based Bio-fertilizer activity of waste of NKP and Synergist after aqueous extraction such as Laboratory experiment and Pot experiment.

 i. Laboratory Experiment: The lab experiment was conducted for determination of Organic Carbon, Phosphorus and Potash of solid NKP, solid Synergist, left out NKP and left out Synergist with soil testing kit under laboratory.

ii. Pot Experiment: The pot experiment was conducted in two seasons under Shade Net house condition during the month of April- June, 2016 and November, 2016 to March 2017 to determine the effect of NKP and synergist as plant based bio-fertilizer for plant growth in terms of total Biomass of the Maize plant.

 

 

Methodology:

1. Healthy uniform size of Maize seeds were sown in the medium size earthen pots. The pot medium was soil and (NKP & synergist) in the ratio 9:1. Individual pots were treated with different doses of the solid NKP, left out NKP and left out (NKP +synergist)

2. The experiment was carried out with 4 treatments for Maize with three replications including control.

 

Results & Discussion:

1.  The average mean mortality rate of mite population for four seasons was found very high @ 5 % concentration of NKP + Synergist (95.68%) under laboratory condition.

2.  Ovicidal effect was very high @ 5 % concentration NKP and synergist (87.77%) under laboratory condition.

3. The average mean percentage reduction of mite population for three seasons was found very high @ 5 % concentration of NKP + Synergist (68.18%) under Shade Net House condition.

4. The average mean percentage reduction of mite population for three seasons was very high @ 5 % concentration of NKP + Synergist (65.07%) under Field condition.

5. Predatory mites were also observed and there was no effect of NKP and Synergist on predatory mites.

6. There was no phytotoxicity symptoms observed on the plants after application of NKP and Synergist.

7. The mean % efficacy enhancement of Profenofos (40%EC) increased to 21.87 % in combination with Synergist extract against Brinjal fruit borer under laboratory condition.

8. From the laboratory experiment it was found that there was nearly 10% reduction of Organic Carbon, Phosphorous, Potash in waste of NKP and Synergist as compared to solid NKP and Synergist. Therefore remaining Organic Carbon, Phosphorous, Potash will act as a Bio-fertilizers for the growth of plants.

9. The waste of (NKP +Synergist) has plant based Bio-fertilizer activity as there is an increase of Biomass in Maize plants in comparison to Control.
